Safari Overview

Samburu Special Five

The Samburu Special Five Safari provides a unique opportunity to experience the wild beauty of Kenya’s Samburu National Reserve while enjoying the comforts of a tented Camp. Nestled against the stunning backdrop of the mighty Ol Olokwe mountain and facing the Ewaso Ngiro River, the camp offers an ideal home for two nights. Here, you can discover the marvels of nature while also honoring the diverse mosaic of humanity thriving within its borders.

Samburu National Reserve is renowned for its unique landscapes and abundant biodiversity. The reserve is home to a variety of wildlife, including the “Samburu Special Five” – Gravy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, and Beisa oryx – species that are rare or absent in other Kenyan parks. The reserve’s varied habitats, which include riverine forests, acacia woodlands, and open savannah, support a rich array of flora and fauna.

The Ewaso Ngiro River, which flows through the reserve, is a lifeline for wildlife, attracting animals such as elephants, lions, leopards, and crocodiles. Game drives along the riverbanks offer excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography, particularly during the dry season when animals congregate around the water sources. The river also provides a picturesque setting for bush breakfasts and sundowners, enhancing the safari experience with unforgettable moments of tranquility and beauty.

One of the highlights of the Samburu Special Five Safari is the chance to engage with the indigenous communities that inhabit the region. The Samburu, Borana, and Rendille tribes each have their unique traditions, languages, and ways of life, contributing to the rich cultural tapestry of the area. Visitors have the opportunity to visit local villages and interact with community members, gaining insight into their daily lives, social structures, and cultural practices.

The Samburu people are known for their vibrant attire, intricate beadwork, and semi-nomadic lifestyle. A visit to a Samburu village can include witnessing traditional dances, learning about their livestock rearing practices, and exploring their deep connection to the land. Similarly, the Borana and Rendille communities offer fascinating perspectives on pastoralist life in the arid regions of northern Kenya.

Samburu National Reserve and its neighboring communities are deeply committed to sustainable tourism and wildlife conservation. Efforts to protect the unique species of the region and their habitats are ongoing, with a focus on involving local communities in conservation initiatives. Visitors to the reserve can learn about these efforts and even participate in activities such as tree planting, anti-poaching patrols, and wildlife monitoring programs.

The Samburu Special Five Safari is more than just a wildlife adventure; it’s a journey of discovery that offers a deep connection to the natural world and the rich cultural heritage of northern Kenya. The stunning landscapes, diverse wildlife, and vibrant communities create a multifaceted experience that is both educational and inspiring.

From the comfort of the Camp, guests can embark on daily game drives, guided nature walks, and cultural tours, each offering unique insights into the region’s ecology and traditions. Whether watching a family of elephants cross the Ewaso Ngiro River, photographing the striking reticulated giraffe, or engaging in a traditional Samburu dance, every moment spent in Samburu is filled with wonder and discovery.

The Samburu Special Five Safari is a carefully crafted experience designed for travel enthusiasts with a passion for adventure and a desire to explore the heart of Africa. Nestled in the stunning landscapes of Samburu National Reserve, offers the perfect base for an unforgettable journey.
