The name comes first, and it carries weight. Ernest Hemingway came to the Kenyan coast for game fishing, and the waters off Watamu were exactly what he was looking for. The hotel that bears his name has been welcoming guests to this stretch of coastline since the 1960s, when it was still known as Seafarers — a fisherman’s establishment of local reputation and considerable character. It became Hemingways in 1988, and by the early 1990s it had established itself as Kenya’s most iconic beach address, a reputation built not on spectacle but on the quieter virtues of exceptional personal service, a loyal staff many of whom have been here for decades, and a position on Garoda Beach that is, simply, one of the finest on the African continent.

The 2018 refurbishment — an $11 million investment that took eighteen months and reimagined the property from the ground up — gave Hemingways Watamu its present form without displacing the warmth and history that distinguish it from newer coastal competitors. The beloved Hemingways Bar, with its deep leather, fishing heritage, and the accumulated memories of thirty years of guests, survived intact. So did most of the staff. The architecture opened up — an airy, light-filled approach that responds naturally to the coastal light and the Indian Ocean view — while the rooms grew in scale and quality to match what the property’s reputation demands.

Hemingway’s Watamu sits within the Watamu Marine National Park, a protected marine ecosystem of extraordinary richness. The coral gardens just offshore support sea turtles, whale sharks in season, dolphins, and a density of tropical fish life that makes Watamu one of the finest snorkelling and diving destinations in the western Indian Ocean. Mida Creek, a tidal mangrove lagoon a short distance from the hotel, offers dhow cruises, kayaking, and birdwatching of remarkable quality across its 32-kilometre shoreline. The Gede Ruins — a 13th-century Swahili city lost to the forest and rediscovered in the colonial era — are five minutes by road. The coast here offers more than a beach.

For African Trails Expeditions guests, Hemingways Watamu is the natural conclusion to a Kenya safari — the place where the transition from bush to ocean happens with the least friction and the most reward.

Rooms & Accommodation

All 39 hotel rooms at Hemingways Watamu measure over 40 square metres, are fully air-conditioned with free Wi-Fi, and have private balconies or terraces facing the Indian Ocean. The renovation introduced bright, coastal-chic interiors in neutral palettes — light timbers, crisp linens, natural materials — that allow the ocean view and the quality of coastal light to do the design work. En-suite bathrooms are generously appointed throughout, with high-quality toiletries and hairdryers. The 21 Residences in the South Wing are the property’s most expansive accommodation — one, two, and four-bedroom configurations with open terraces, full kitchen facilities in the larger units, and the same hotel amenity access as the main rooms. The four-bedroom Garoda Beach House, the property’s most private option, is a self-contained villa with split-level living, panoramic ocean views, and an outdoor barbecue terrace.

Dining

The main restaurant at Hemingways Watamu is an alfresco brasserie that opens directly to the ocean — a setting that does the chef’s work half before the menu is opened, simply by delivering the Indian Ocean and the Watamu evening light as the dining backdrop. The focus is on fresh local seafood: Lamu crab claws, Watamu prawns, bahari calamari, and the catch of the day prepared with a combination of Swahili coastal tradition and contemporary technique. The Hemingways Bar — the property’s most storied room, unchanged in character through the 2018 renovation — serves the cocktail menu alongside the fishing trophies, archival photographs, and the kind of easy camaraderie that a thirty-year-old institution accumulates without trying. The more casual Gede Café Bar handles fresh pastries, paninis, excellent Kenyan coffee, and the best gelato on the coast. Theme evenings — Swahili fish nights, beach barbecues — run regularly and make the dining programme at Hemingways one of the most varied on the Kenyan coast.

Best Time to Visit

Watamu’s coastal climate follows a seasonal pattern distinct from Kenya’s inland safari parks. The finest months for beach holidays are December through April, when temperatures sit comfortably in the high twenties with a pleasant coastal breeze, the sea reaches its warmest, and the Indian Ocean visibility for snorkelling and diving is at its clearest. January through March is the driest and most consistently beautiful period — the combination of reliable sunshine, warm water, and uncrowded beaches makes this the coast’s peak season for discerning travellers.

The long rains run from April through June, with May typically the heaviest month. The coast remains operational and beautiful in the rains, with significantly reduced visitor numbers and more accessible rates, but some water activities are weather-dependent. June to September brings the southeast trade winds — slightly cooler, occasionally breezy — and is the prime season for humpback whale watching as the migration passes. October and November see the short rains; brief, warm, and increasingly regarded as an excellent low-crowd time to visit, with birding across Mida Creek at its most diverse. Hemingways Watamu is open year-round and pairs seamlessly with a Maasai Mara, Amboseli, or Tsavo safari — Malindi Airport is 30 minutes away, with daily connections to Nairobi’s Wilson Airport.
