Land of a Thousand Hills and epic Primate Adventures

Rwanda

Rwanda, often referred to as “the land of a thousand hills,” is a small country characterized by its rolling green landscape, resembling a glittering emerald in East Africa. The country’s distinctive features include mist-shrouded volcanoes, lush rainforests, tea estates, and winding roads that weave through rural villages. However, it is the wildlife and the people of Rwanda that truly enrich the experience of visiting this beautiful destination.

One of the highlights of a trip to Rwanda is the chance to encounter mountain gorillas up close. After trekking through whistling bamboo groves and shadowy jungles, you may find yourself staring into the eyes of one of these magnificent creatures. Approximately half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas inhabit Rwanda, with around 178 of them residing in the hills of Volcanoes National Park, one of the oldest parks in Africa.

In addition to the gorillas, the park is also home to golden monkeys, while colobus monkeys swing through the treetops in Nyungwe National Park. If you embark on a game drive or a boat safari in Akagera National Park, you might be lucky enough to spot southern white rhinos, black rhinos, giraffes, zebras, elephants, and hippos.

The people of Rwanda are known for their warmth and hospitality, and getting to know their culture and way of life adds depth to any visit. The vibrant city of Kigali offers world-class boutique accommodations, excellent restaurants and cafés, and great shopping opportunities. Meanwhile, rural Rwanda provides a glimpse into the daily lives of people working on tea and coffee plantations, as well as in small villages.

Whether you choose to stay in a stunning modern lodge in the foothills of the Virunga Mountains or enjoy an intimate boutique hotel on a leafy street in Kigali, Rwanda offers exquisite accommodations to complement its unique experiences.
