Lake Nakuru National Park covers 188 square kilometres of the Great Rift Valley floor, roughly a third of which is the lake itself — a shallow alkaline basin whose waters support concentrations of flamingo that, at their peak, produce a pink fringe along the entire shoreline visible from several kilometres away. The spectacle draws ornithologists and photographers from across the world; the park’s wildlife credentials extend considerably further than its flamingo headline, with a rhino sanctuary that holds significant populations of both black and white rhino, a healthy lion and leopard presence, and the rare Rothschild’s giraffe among its resident species. The birdlist runs to over 400 recorded species across the park’s varied habitats.

Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge sits on the hill that gave the park its most evocative vantage point — the ridge of Lion Hill, elevated above the park’s floor with the lake spread below and the Rift Valley escarpment rising beyond. The position was chosen for its panoramic quality, and the lodge has exploited it consistently: a bar terrace positioned to take the fullest possible lake view, chalet-style rooms terraced along the hillside with each balcony angled to face the water, and a swimming pool whose orientation ensures that lap swimmers have the Nakuru flamingo line in peripheral vision throughout.

Seventy-five rooms and suites are arranged in low-rise chalet blocks along the hillside, connected to the main lodge areas by raised wooden walkways through the acacia garden. The architecture draws from the lodge’s surroundings — locally sourced materials, a woody palette of warm tones that harmonises with the acacia canopy rather than competing with it. The organic vegetable and herb garden, maintained within the lodge grounds, supplies the Flamingo Restaurant’s kitchen with fresh produce throughout the year — a farm-to-table approach that influences the menu quality meaningfully and produces a dining experience that guests consistently rate among the park’s finest. The Tuliza Spa, with its range of African-inspired treatments and its particular setting within the lodge’s garden, rounds out a facility that makes a two or three-night Nakuru stay more rewarding than the circuit stop its park’s compact size might otherwise suggest.

Perched on Lion Hill inside Lake Nakuru National Park, Sarova Lion Hill overlooks the flamingo-flushed lake and Rift Valley escarpment — 75 lake-facing chalets, an organic garden kitchen, and Tuliza Spa making it the more characterful of the park's two in-park lodges.

Dining

The Flamingo Restaurant takes its name from the spectacle visible through its windows and across its outdoor terrace — the lake’s flamingo population, shifting and reassembling with the light through the course of each day, visible from the indoor dining room, the poolside terrace, and the al fresco tables that make up the lodge’s most atmospheric seating. The kitchen draws directly from the organic garden within the lodge grounds: herbs, vegetables, and salad produce harvested fresh for each service and incorporated into buffet menus that blend continental, Swahili coastal, and locally inspired Kenyan cooking. The salad station, refreshed from the garden daily, has particular consistency; the dessert buffet earns disproportionate attention from most guests. For special occasions, champagne breakfasts, lawn dining, and bush dinners in the park can be arranged. The Panoramic Bar Terrace — the lodge’s most social space outside mealtimes — occupies the property’s highest viewing position, with the full lake panorama as its backdrop and a cocktail list that rewards patience with the sunset.

Dining at Sarova Lion Hill

Best Time to Visit

Lake Nakuru National Park is productive and rewarding year-round, and Sarova Lion Hill operates without seasonal closure. The park’s fully fenced status means that its rhino, lion, leopard, Rothschild’s giraffe, and other resident species are present and findable across all twelve months — the enclosed boundary eliminates the seasonal migration patterns that affect game viewing at unfenced destinations. The dry seasons — January to March and July to October — offer the clearest skies, most reliable weather for outdoor activities, and the best photographic conditions for the lake view and its flamingo population.

Flamingo concentrations fluctuate with water level and algae production — conditions that vary year to year as well as seasonally. The lake’s flamingo numbers are most spectacular when alkalinity and water levels are favourable, conditions that the lodge’s staff can advise on in advance of a visit. The short rains of November and December bring brief afternoon showers; the long rains of April and May intensify the park’s greenery and birdlife. Sarova Lion Hill pairs naturally with the Maasai Mara, Lake Elmentaita, Lake Naivasha, or Amboseli for a Rift Valley or southern Kenya circuit.
