Sentrim Tsavo Lodge
A 26-room pioneer-style tented camp in Tsavo East, featuring four of the Big Five, red dust elephants at the waterhole, and an authentic old-safari atmosphere.
Tsavo East is the largest national park in Kenya and one of the largest in the world — 13,747 square kilometres of semi-arid savannah, seasonal rivers, ancient lava flows, and the red laterite soil that coats the park’s elephant herds and gives them the distinctive rust-red colouring that has made the Tsavo elephant an iconic image of the Kenya wilderness. The park’s defining characteristics are its scale, its wildness, and the sense of an Africa that has not been tidied up for tourism: vast open plains, sparse acacia scrub, and the knowledge that the wildlife here — lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, cheetah, crocodile, hippo — occupies a landscape far larger than any single camp can survey.
Sentrim Tsavo Lodge sits inside the park, 11 km from Voi Gate on the western approach. The camp’s most immediate asset is its waterhole, positioned directly in front of the main lodge area — a permanent water source that draws a steady and unregimented procession of elephants, buffaloes, zebra, and plains game at all hours. Watching animals arrive, drink, and move on from a poolside chair or the restaurant terrace, with no vehicle and no drive required, is a consistent and genuine wildlife experience that larger, more remote camps in the park do not always offer so conveniently.
The lodge draws its design reference from the great pioneer safari camps of the early 20th century — canvas tents on elevated platforms, stone walls that echo the colours of the park’s red soil, campfires under open skies, and a straightforward approach to comfort that does not overcomplicate the experience of being in one of Africa’s great wilderness parks. The Ndovu Restaurant, the bar with fireplace, the swimming pool with pool bar, and the spa tub provide the day’s leisure framework around a game drive programme that covers the park’s major attractions: Lugard Falls, Mudanda Rock, the Galana River crocodile viewing point, and the open plains of the Yatta Plateau area.

Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Sentrim Tsavo is during the dry seasons from June to October and January to February, when the semi-arid bush thins out and smaller watering holes dry up, forcing the park’s famous red elephants, lions, and massive buffalo herds to congregate reliably around permanent water sources like the Voi River and Aruba Dam. Conversely, the wet green seasons from November to December and March to May are ideal if you prefer lush emerald landscapes, dramatic skies for photography, and a vibrant influx of migratory birds, all while enjoying much lower accommodation rates and fewer crowds, even though the thicker vegetation makes spotting wildlife a bit more challenging.
