Mara Leisure Camp
A 29-unit tented camp and family cottages on the Talek River, offering a pool and access to four Maasai Mara wildlife areas from one base.
The Talek River marks the northern boundary of the Maasai Mara National Reserve — a seasonal waterway whose confluence with the reserve’s four main wildlife viewing sectors makes the Talek Gate area one of the most strategically located positions in the entire Mara ecosystem. Camps on the Talek’s banks are within striking distance of the Mara River crossing points to the west, the open Sekenani plains to the south, the Olare Motorogi sector to the north, and the Talek corridor itself — a river system that draws elephant, hippo, crocodile, and the predators that follow the prey species using the water. Mara Leisure Camp occupies this confluence position on the river’s edge, a location that gives game drives from the camp access to the full range of Mara wildlife zones from a single base.
The camp’s 29 units cover a practical range of configurations. The 17 standard Nyati tents are the camp’s principal inventory — canvas units with en-suite bathrooms and private balconies or patios suited to couples and solo travellers. The 8 jumbo tents are larger canvas units suited to families or guests who want more interior space. The 3 Jamii cottages are solid-wall interconnecting structures — a double room and a twin room sharing a connecting door — the camp’s best option for families with children of any age who want separate sleeping spaces. A single honeymoon tent is the camp’s most private and considered unit, positioned for seclusion and romance.
The main guest area faces the river with a swimming pool and separate children’s pool, a restaurant serving full-board buffet meals, a bar and bonfire deck, and a gift shop. A naturalist is on staff to deliver wildlife lectures covering the Maasai Mara’s ecosystems, bird and animal species, and the Maasai community’s relationship with the reserve — a resource that adds an educational dimension to the standard game drive programme. Maasai cultural visits to local manyattas are bookable through the camp.
On the Talek River at the Maasai Mara boundary, Mara Leisure Camp offers 29 tents and cottages across four categories. With pools, a restaurant, and full activities, it is a practical, full-board base for families.

Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Mara Leisure Camp depends entirely on your safari priorities, as its location along the Talek River on the northern northern boundary of the reserve offers prime access to seasonal wildlife shifts. For those seeking the ultimate dramatic spectacle, the dry season from July to October is the peak time to visit, when the millions of wildebeest and zebras of the Great Migration arrive in the area, offering excellent chances to witness perilous river crossings nearby while the thinned-out vegetation makes resident big cats easy to spot. If your goal is to experience phenomenal predator action with far fewer tourist vehicles, the short dry season from January to March—often called the “lion season”—is ideal, as the birth of countless herbivore calves draws active pride hunting across the plains. Alternatively, the wet green seasons from November to December and April to May transform the savannah into a vibrant emerald backdrop perfect for photography and migratory birdwatching, rewarding visitors with the lowest accommodation rates of the year and highly personal game drives, though the taller grass can make wildlife a bit more challenging to track.
