Angama Mara
Suspended in mid-air above the greatest wildlife theatre on earth.
Angama Mara
High on the rim of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, where the earth drops away in a breathtaking sweep of ochre plains and endless sky, Angama Mara keeps its promise of wonder. The name, drawn from the Swahili for ‘suspended in mid-air’, is no idle poetry — perched a thousand feet above the floor of the Maasai Mara, this extraordinary lodge exists in a world unto itself, where dawn arrives in a blaze of copper light and hot-air balloons drift like silent lanterns over the savannah below.
Conceived by owners Nicky and Tanya Fitzgerald and built on one of the most coveted sites on the continent, Angama Mara divides into two intimate camps — North and South — each housing fifteen glass-fronted tented suites along the edge of the Oloololo Escarpment. The architecture is unmistakably of this place: red brickwork that echoes the Maasai’s ochre homes, floor-to-ceiling glass that dissolves the boundary between interior and wilderness, and sweeping wooden decks from which you may watch the drama of the Mara unfold in cinematic scope without leaving the comfort of a canvas chair.
Days at Angama Mara are yours to shape. Descend the private access road into the Mara Triangle — one of Africa’s most consistently rewarding game-viewing destinations — for the Big Five, the Great Migration river crossings, and the quiet intimacies of the bush at first light. Return for a garden-to-table lunch beneath the moth trees of the Shamba, linger over sundowners at the Boma while Maasai warriors perform against a tangerine sky, or lose yourself entirely in the Photographic Studio, printing proof sheets of a morning’s extraordinary sightings. Angama Mara does not merely offer a safari. It offers the best version of one.
Perched 1,000 feet above the Maasai Mara on the Great Rift Valley, Angama Mara offers 30 all-inclusive tented suites, Big Five game drives and iconic Out of Africa experiences. Plan your stay with African Trails Expeditions.

Rooms & Accommodation
Each of Angama Mara’s 30 tented suites spans over 100 square metres and is positioned to command the same uninterrupted view of the Mara below. The design is contemporary yet deeply rooted in the landscape — floor-to-ceiling glass walls that stack entirely open to merge the interior with the escarpment’s edge, polished parquet floors, vibrant splashes of Maasai red, and the kind of considered detail that speaks of genuine care rather than formula.
Your private wooden deck is the heart of the tent: a rocking chair, a hammock, and a telescope trained on the plains below. In the evening, a personal tent steward and butler ensure that every quiet preference is anticipated. Interconnecting suites are available for families or travelling companions, and Patty’s Tent offers fully accessible luxury for guests with physical limitations — because at Angama Mara, the wilderness belongs to everyone.

Dining
At Angama Mara, dining is never merely a meal — it is another act in the theatre of the Mara. The culinary team draws on Kenya’s finest seasonal produce, much of it grown in the lodge’s own Shamba kitchen garden, to create menus that change daily and celebrate the abundance of the land.
Breakfast might be taken on the deck of your tent as the morning game drive returns, or lingered over in the open-sided dining room as hot-air balloons drift past the glass frontage. Lunch is served on the baraza overlooking the plains, in the garden beneath the moth trees, or — most memorably — on a blanket at the Out of Africa kopje. Dinner has more guises still: the lantern-lit Forest BBQ, a candlelit meal in your own tent, a long table in the library, or a moon-washed evening on the viewing platform with the silhouette of the escarpment edge below.
The bar stocks a thoughtful selection of spirits, wines and craft beers. French Champagne and premium reserve wines are available at additional cost. Dietary requirements — from vegetarian to coeliac to cultural preferences — are handled with effortless grace by a team for whom the Angama Way is a genuine creed.

Best Time to Visit
The Maasai Mara rewards visitors every month of the year — the question is not whether to come, but what you wish to witness.
The dry season from July to October is the zenith of the Mara calendar. This is when the Great Wildebeest Migration reaches its dramatic crescendo: more than a million wildebeest and several hundred thousand zebra pour across the Mara River in lunging, chaotic crossings that rank among nature’s most visceral spectacles. July through September are the peak Migration months, when the crossings are most frequent and the predator activity most intense. October brings a quieter transition — the herds begin their journey south, but the resident wildlife is exceptional and the bush retains its dry-season clarity.
The short rains of November and the long rains of April through June transform the Mara into an emerald world of extraordinary beauty. Vegetation is lush, the light is impossibly soft, and the resident Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino — are present throughout. These green-season months offer lower rates, fewer visitors, and a more intimate encounter with the land.
January and February are among the finest months for predator sightings: the grass has dried, visibility is excellent, and the Mara Triangle is alive with activity. December brings the short dry season and a festive atmosphere at the lodge.
