There are camps in the Maasai Mara, and then there are camps with a position. Entim belongs to the second category with a particular conviction. Tucked into the riverine forest on a bend of the Mara River close to several of the reserve’s most active crossing points, the camp was designed with a single primary purpose: to place guests as close as possible to the Great Migration’s most dramatic event. It does this literally — wildebeest gather on the opposite bank in their hundreds of thousands during the migration months, and the river crossing that follows can be witnessed from a tent veranda without leaving the camp. This is not a selling point that many properties can claim with honesty, and Entim claims it entirely accurately.

The camp’s name derives from the Maa word for forest, and the dense riverine woodland into which it is tucked gives Entim its particular atmosphere: shaded, immersive, and audibly alive in ways that open-plain camps are not. The sounds of the Mara at night — grunting wildebeest on the bank below, hippos shifting in the river, the distant exchange between lion prides — arrive through the canvas walls with a proximity that reminds guests, if any reminder were needed, that they are in the middle of a national reserve rather than on its periphery. Red-robed Maasai warriors escort guests to their tents after dinner, a hot water bottle warming the bed against the Mara night, and sleep comes to a soundtrack that no recording has ever captured adequately.

Twelve tented suites are raised on wooden decks above the riverbank, each with an en-suite bathroom, a private lounge area, and a veranda facing the river and the open plains beyond. The decor is earthy and unshowy — natural textures, warm tones, the wood-framed beds and director’s chairs of classic safari style — with no attempt to compete with the view. The communal areas follow the same philosophy: an open-fronted lounge tent with large leather sofas, a small library, a separate bar, and a dining tent where tables are set beside the river-facing veranda, allowing guests to eat while the plains in front of them remain in full view. A fire pit between the communal tents is the gathering point for early morning coffee and evening sundowners.

For those wanting complete exclusivity, the Entim Private Wing consists of eight tents overlooking a wooded spring, available for exclusive use by groups who want the Mara River experience without sharing a camp.

Entim means "forest" in Maa — and the camp sits precisely where forest meets river, close to the reserve's most active Migration crossing points. Twelve tented suites on raised decks, inside the reserve, with no gate curfew and no transit between you and the wildlife.

Rooms & Accommodation

All twelve tented suites are raised on wooden decks above the riverbank, oriented to face the Mara River and the open plains that extend toward the Rift Valley escarpment beyond. Each tent has a wood-framed double or twin bed, two bedside tables, a storage chest, hanging space, a cosy private lounge area with chairs, and a veranda furnished with a table and chairs for river viewing. En-suite bathrooms at the rear of each tent include a flush toilet, washbasin, and hot shower. The decor is warm and classic safari — earthy tones, natural textures, and Kenyan artwork — without pretension or excess. The tents are entirely eco-friendly: solar panels provide electricity and hot water, there are no permanent structures in the camp, and waste is managed with Nairobi recycling runs for glass and paper. Local materials and local labour were used throughout construction.

Dining

The dining tent at Entim opens directly onto the Mara River view — tables set beautifully, director’s chairs providing comfort, and the plains and river in full view throughout each meal. The kitchen takes a farm-to-table approach with serious intent: homemade breads and pastries at breakfast, creative menus built from organic produce and fresh ingredients, candlelit dinners on the open-fronted deck as the Mara evening closes in. Bush picnics and sundowners in hand-picked spots across the reserve are arranged for groups who want to eat away from camp; private dining on a tent veranda can be arranged for occasions that call for something more intimate than the communal table. The bar, nestled between the lounge and dining tent, is well-stocked with house wines, beers, and selected spirits — all included in the full-board rate — and the fire pit beside it is the camp’s social heart at both dawn and dusk.

Best Time to Visit

Entim Mara Camp is open year-round and the Maasai Mara rewards safari guests in every month — but the camp’s position on the Mara River gives its seasonal calendar a particular character. The Great Migration peaks between July and October, when the wildebeest herds pour across the river from Tanzania and the crossings visible from the camp’s verandas reach their most dramatic and most frequent. August and September are typically the most intense months; advance booking twelve months ahead is strongly advised for this period.

Outside migration season, the reserve’s resident wildlife is exceptional. January to March sees the calving season of the Serengeti-Mara wildebeest population, drawing lion, cheetah, and leopard into concentrated hunting activity on the plains. The short rains of November and December bring lush scenery and dramatically reduced vehicle numbers across the reserve. April and May see the long rains — the camp’s riverine forest setting is at its most verdant, the Mara River is in fuller flow, and the sense of having the national reserve almost entirely to oneself is as pronounced as at any time of year. Rates during this period are typically the most accessible of the annual calendar.
