Kenya’s Great Rift Valley is one of the great geological spectacles of the planet, a trench 6,000 kilometres long that bisects East Africa from the Red Sea to Mozambique, its floor broken by extinct volcanoes and scattered with a chain of shallow alkaline lakes that support some of the most remarkable concentrations of birdlife on earth. Lake Elmenteita is among the finest of these lakes: a glittering soda flat in the Nakuru district, recognised alongside Lakes Bogoria and Nakuru as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the Kenya Lake System designation. The name derives from the Maasai Ol muteita — “place of dust” — though the flamingos and great white pelicans that gather along its shores give it a quality that is anything but austere.

Lake Elmenteita Serena Camp occupies a position on this lake’s shoreline within the 48,000-acre Soysambu Conservancy that is, in the most straightforward sense, difficult to improve upon. Twenty-four elegantly appointed tented suites are set among golden-barked fever trees and acacia woodland, each facing the lake with a private veranda from which the water, and everything on it, is the primary entertainment. The style of the camp evokes a colonial safari era of aristocratic elegance: rich brown hardwood floors, polished brass fixtures, hand-woven rugs, and four-poster beds crowned with white mosquito netting speak to an aesthetic that predates the contemporary safari design vocabulary without feeling dated. It is comfortable and distinctive in equal measure.

Soysambu itself is one of Kenya’s most storied conservancies, a vast private wildlife area with a history stretching back to the first British settlers who walked south from the Somali coast in the late 1890s. Today it supports a diverse wildlife population that ranges across its open plains, acacia woodland, and lakeshore habitat: buffalo, zebra, giraffe, eland, impala, and a rich suite of predators that includes lion, leopard, and cheetah. The lake’s birdlife is extraordinary in scale and variety tens of thousands of flamingos, great white pelicans on one of East Africa’s most important nesting grounds, and well over 400 recorded species across the conservancy’s varied habitats.

For guests building a Kenya safari itinerary, Lake Elmenteita Serena occupies a unique position: close enough to Nairobi to serve as an effortless overnight before or after a longer safari in the north or south, yet rich enough in landscape, wildlife, and atmosphere to warrant two or three nights entirely on its own terms.

Tucked among golden-barked acacia trees under the shadow of ancient volcanoes, Lake Elmenteita Serena Camp sits on the sapphire shores of one of Kenya's most ecologically significant lakes. 24 colonial-style tented suites, exceptional birdlife, game drives across the vast Soysambu Conservancy

Rooms & Accommodation

All 24 tented suites are appointed in a colonial safari style that balances understated elegance with genuine comfort. Rich brown hardwood floors and mouldings, hand-woven rugs, polished brass fixtures, and four-poster beds with fine white mosquito netting give each tent a warmth and character that modern minimalist safari design often lacks. Private verandas face directly onto the lake, or onto the conservancy’s open grassland, and the quality of light across Lake Elmenteita at dawn and dusk makes these verandas worth sitting on at every opportunity. Each tent has an en-suite bathroom with a double vanity and a hot shower. The Flamingo Suite, the camp’s largest and most luxurious accommodation, adds a separate lounge, a Jacuzzi with lake views, and a mini-fridge to the standard offering.

Dining

The dining tent at Lake Elmentaita Serena overlooks the swimming pool and a busy waterhole that draws wildlife from the conservancy throughout the day, making it one of the few safari camps where the view from breakfast genuinely competes with the previous morning’s game drive. The kitchen serves buffet and à la carte options at breakfast, with choices ranging from fresh pastries and yoghurt to eggs cooked to order. Sunday brunch introduces a Swahili dimension, coconut mahamri, kaimati, madafu, that reflects the Kenyan coast’s culinary influence with warmth and authenticity. Dinner is served à la table d’hôte: soup, entrée, dessert, cheese and crackers, paired with Kenyan tea or coffee, with wine available throughout. Bush breakfasts on the flamingo-lined shores, barbecue dinners under the Rift Valley stars, and sundowners on the cliff above the lake as the light turns gold complete a dining offer that makes excellent use of one of Kenya’s most naturally dramatic settings.

Best Time to Visit

Lake Elmentaita Serena Camp is open and rewarding year-round, and its position within the Soysambu Conservancy, rather than a national park, means it operates without the seasonal access restrictions that affect some of Kenya’s more remote destinations. The lake’s birdlife peaks during the wet season from April to June and again in November, when migratory species arrive in large numbers, and the flamingo population on the lakeshore reaches its most spectacular concentrations. Game viewing across the conservancy is best during the dry seasons — January to March and July to October — when shorter vegetation and concentrated wildlife at water sources produce the most reliable sightings.

The camp’s proximity to Nairobi makes it an excellent choice as a standalone two or three-night escape from the city in any season. It is equally effective as a circuit stop between Nairobi and the Maasai Mara, Amboseli, or the northern parks — offering a restful night in a landscape of genuine beauty without adding significant travel time to the broader itinerary. Lake Nakuru National Park, 30 minutes away, is accessible and productive throughout the year.
