Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Escape

Dawn breaks over Kigali, setting the stage for your journey. After a leisurely breakfast, your guide briefs you about the adventure ahead. First, visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre, a poignant tribute to over a million Rwandans lost in 1994, highlighting the country’s path to reconciliation and remarkable progress.

After lunch at a contemporary Kigali restaurant, you head north. The landscape shifts to lush tea plantations and terraced villages as you make your way to Volcanoes National Park. Five dormant volcanoes, the Virunga Massif, rise through the haze, home to some of Earth’s most endangered species.

This trek differs from gorilla tracking; golden monkeys inhabit lower elevations and are lively and entertaining. Once you find a habituated troop, you’ll be treated to an hour of energetic acrobatics, with infants clinging to their mothers.

After lunch and check-out, journey to Lake Kivu through Rwanda’s agricultural heartland. Kivu, one of Africa’s Great Lakes, is safe for swimming, which is a rare luxury.

Arrive in Gisenyi, Rwanda’s lakeside resort, and after a brief refreshment, enjoy a one-hour boat safari. Explore volcanic islands, visit hot springs, and see traditional fishing techniques, with the option to swim in the warm freshwater amid stunning mountain scenery.

Lake Kivu’s dawn brings tranquility as you enjoy a leisurely breakfast with views spanning two nations. After check-out, your guide takes you on a city tour of Gisenyi, visiting frontier crossings at Petite Barrier and Grand Barrier. Experience the contrast between Gisenyi and Congo’s Goma, then explore vibrant markets with local goods.

At midday, begin your return journey to Kigali, stopping for lunch at a scenic restaurant overlooking terraced hillsides. Arriving in Kigali by early afternoon, you may transfer to the airport according to your flight schedule.
