Loisaba Conservancy is not a reserve managed at arm’s length. It is a working, breathing landscape — 57,000 acres under the stewardship of the Loisaba Community Trust, threaded by one of Kenya’s most critical elephant movement corridors and, now, home to Kenya’s newest black rhino sanctuary. Loisaba Tented Camp sits above it all on an escarpment edge that gives every tent, every meal, and every morning coffee a view that most safari properties spend considerable marketing effort trying to approximate. Here, it simply comes with the address.

The camp is operated by the Elewana Collection — a name built on the Swahili concept of harmony — and the hospitality reflects that foundation. Twelve tented suites are custom-built with floor-to-ceiling doors and windows, polished hardwood floors, and high ceilings that keep the interior cool through the heat of the Laikipia afternoon. The design language is confident East African — rich textures, handcrafted furniture, and a considered sense of place rather than a generic tented-camp aesthetic. The main area opens onto one of the most photographed infinity pools in northern Kenya, positioned to frame the escarpment drop and the plains below in a single unbroken view.

What distinguishes a Laikipia safari at Loisaba from the Mara or Amboseli circuit is the breadth of how the conservancy can be experienced. Game drives here run on a private concession, meaning no other vehicles and no circuit roads — guides read the landscape rather than follow the crowd. Night drives, horse-back safaris, camel treks, and guided bush walks run alongside the standard 4WD programme, offering different speeds and different intimacies with the same remarkable ecosystem. The conservancy’s anti-poaching unit — complete with trained sniffer dogs — operates across the property daily, a visible reminder that conservation here is active, funded, and working.

Perched on the lip of a dramatic escarpment in northern Laikipia, Loisaba Tented Camp recalibrates your sense of scale. Twelve custom-built tented suites look out across 57,000 acres of elephant country, lion territory, and open sky — with Mount Kenya anchoring the horizon on a clear morning.

Our Commitment to Conservation

Tourism revenue at Loisaba is reinvested directly into wildlife protection, community healthcare, and education across surrounding Laikipia communities. The Elewana Collection's Land & Life Foundation extends this further — funding ranger training, conservation infrastructure, and school-building projects across its East African portfolio.

Rooms & Accommodation

Twelve tented suites sit along the escarpment in a configuration that gives each one unimpeded views and a meaningful degree of privacy from neighbouring tents. Construction is custom throughout: polished wood floors, floor-to-ceiling sliding doors and windows that dissolve the boundary between interior and landscape, and high ceilings that maintain airflow during the warm Laikipia afternoons. Interiors are furnished in what the Elewana Collection calls Africana sophistication — a mix of handcrafted local materials and considered contemporary design that avoids the imitation-colonial aesthetic that dates many camps in this category. Family configurations connect two tents via a private walkway, with a dedicated lounge area and veranda. One family tent includes a private infinity pool. En-suite bathrooms are full specification throughout, with double basins and an open-air shower option where privacy permits.

Tented Suite

Tented Suite

50 m² Max 2 adults

Each tent opens onto a private veranda through floor-to-ceiling glass doors, with a canopy bed facing the plains and interiors of handcrafted Africana — woven textiles, carved wood, lighting made for long evenings. The en-suite has double basins, rain shower, and bath. At night, with the doors open and the conservancy audible across the escarpment, the tent becomes something else entirely.

Family Tent

Family Tent

100 m² (combined) Max 2 adults + 2 children

Two connected tented suites share a private lounge and shaded veranda, with one configuration adding a private infinity pool — an unusual inclusion for a tented camp, and one that changes the rhythm of a multi-day stay. Each tent keeps its own en-suite and veranda. Enough communal space to gather, enough private space to disappear.

Dining

Meals at Loisaba Tented Camp follow the rhythm of the bush day rather than a fixed restaurant schedule. Breakfast begins before first light for guests heading out on early game drives — a hot departure spread, Kenyan coffee, and the kind of efficiency that doesn’t sacrifice quality. Bush breakfasts at sunrise on the escarpment are a signature offering: a full spread laid out in the open landscape, with the plains waking up below. Lunch is served in the main dining area or on the broad wooden deck, depending on the weather. Dinner is a full table service under canvas, with menus that rotate around seasonal produce and Kenyan sourcing, anchored by grilled proteins, East African staples, and a wine list with depth appropriate to the price point. Sundowners are taken at the camp’s favoured lookout points — chosen by the guide, timed precisely, and accompanied by the Loisaba signature cocktail.

Best Time to Visit

Loisaba Conservancy is a year-round destination, though the dry seasons produce the most concentrated wildlife viewing. June to October is peak: vegetation thins, water sources concentrate, and elephant movements along the conservancy corridor become highly predictable. The short dry spell of January and February is equally productive and considerably quieter. The long rains of April and May bring the landscape back to colour — birding reaches its annual peak, and the conservancy empties of visitors to a degree that suits travellers who prioritise solitude over optimal sightings. Laikipia’s altitude (approximately 1,600 metres) keeps temperatures moderate throughout the year, with cool mornings and evenings and warm, dry afternoons in the dry season.
