Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Beach Holiday
Safari Summary
Tanzania is one of those rare places where the wild world still feels genuinely untamed, where lions rule at dawn, and the ocean glitters at dusk. This 12-day luxury Tanzania safari takes you through the finest stops on the famed Northern Circuit before delivering you to the coral-laced shores of Zanzibar for a sun-drenched finale.
You’ll track elephant herds through the ancient baobab forests of Tarangire, watch flamingos paint Lake Manyara pink at sunrise, and spend three extraordinary days in the Serengeti, Africa’s most celebrated wilderness, where the Great Migration thunders across the plains in a spectacle no documentary can prepare you for. Then, the Ngorongoro Crater: a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest intact volcanic caldera on earth, sheltering the densest concentration of wildlife anywhere in Africa. Your safari ends not with a long-haul flight, but with the warm Indian Ocean breeze of Zanzibar, white sand, spice-scented air, and total surrender.
Every detail of this Tanzania safari itinerary is arranged by African Trails Expeditions, a boutique luxury operator with over 20 years of experience in East Africa. Private game drives, hand-selected luxury lodges and tented camps, and an expert naturalist guide from start to finish.

Itinerary
Your Tanzania safari begins in Arusha, a vibrant highland city nestled at the foot of Mount Meru and the natural staging post for every great Northern Circuit adventure. Your African Trails Expeditions representative meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfers you to your boutique hotel in Arusha, where the evening is yours to settle in. Tonight, the savanna awaits. Enjoy a welcome briefing over dinner with your lead guide, who will walk you through the days ahead: the parks, the wildlife patterns, and the hidden details that only two decades of East Africa experience can reveal.
This morning, you depart Arusha and head south into Tarangire National Park, one of Tanzania’s most underrated and visually arresting wilderness areas. Tarangire is elephant country: home to some of the largest herds on the continent, moving in ancient procession through a landscape of red-dust plains and towering baobab trees that have stood for centuries. The Tarangire River acts as a magnet for wildlife during the dry season, drawing lions, leopards, zebra, wildebeest, and over 550 species of birds to its banks.
An afternoon game drive delivers your first true taste of Tanzania safari wildlife, extraordinary, unhurried, and deeply alive.
A short drive takes you to Lake Manyara National Park, compact in size but astonishing in variety. The alkaline lake itself turns vivid pink when thousands of lesser flamingos gather along its shores, one of the most photographed sights in all of Africa. Lake Manyara is also famous for its tree-climbing lions, a rare behaviour unique to this park and a few locations in Uganda & Kenya, where prides drape themselves across the branches of fever trees in the afternoon heat. The forest fringe along the park’s edge shelters troops of baboons and blue monkeys, while hippos wallow in the shallows below. A park that rewards patience and a good pair of binoculars.
Today, you cross the rim of the Ngorongoro highlands and descend into the endless golden grasslands of Serengeti National Park, the most iconic safari destination on earth, and the stage for the greatest wildlife spectacle our planet produces. The word “Serengeti” comes from the Maasai “Siringet,” meaning “the place where the land runs on forever,” and as you enter the park, that name makes perfect sense.
Your afternoon game drive begins immediately upon arrival, with eyes peeled for lion prides, cheetah on the hunt, and the sheer enormity of the Serengeti ecosystem stretching to every horizon. Three full days here means no rush, just pure, immersive Tanzania safari at its finest.
A full day in the Serengeti is one of the great privileges of luxury travel in East Africa. Rise before sunrise for an early morning game drive; this is when the predators are most active and the light turns the plains a molten copper that no camera fully captures. The Great Wildebeest Migration, the largest overland migration of animals on earth, sees over 1.5 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra moving in a continuous loop through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.
Your expert guide positions you ahead of the herds, reading the land the way only years of experience allow. For those who wish to elevate the experience further, an optional hot air balloon safari at dawn is available, floating silently above the plains as the African sun rises.
Your final full day in the Serengeti is yours to spend as the wildlife dictates. The granite kopjes, ancient rock outcrops rising from the grasslands, are favourite resting spots for leopards, lions, and rock hyrax, and your guide knows exactly where to look. Afternoons in the Serengeti carry a different kind of magic: the heat softens, the game returns to the watering holes, and sundowners in the bush become a ceremony. Watch the sun melt into the horizon from the roof hatch of your game vehicle, gin and tonic in hand, the Serengeti spread before you in every direction. This is the Africa of imagination made real, and it never disappoints.
The Ngorongoro Crater needs little introduction, and yet nothing prepares you for the first moment you stand at the crater rim and look down. Some 600 metres below, a self-contained ecosystem of extraordinary density sprawls across 260 square kilometres: lion prides, black rhino, elephant bulls, hippo pools, hyena clans and vast herds of zebra and wildebeest living within the walls of the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa’s Seven Natural Wonders, Ngorongoro consistently delivers the most concentrated Big Five sightings on the continent. Descend with your private guide for a full day on the crater floor, a Tanzania safari experience that stands entirely apart.
This morning, you make the scenic drive back to Arusha through the highlands of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, passing Maasai villages, rolling green escarpments, and the distant silhouette of Mount Kilimanjaro on a clear day. Arrive in Arusha by midday with the afternoon free, ideal for a final browse of the local curio markets, a spa treatment at your hotel, or simply sitting in the garden with a cold drink, letting four extraordinary days of Tanzania safari settle into memory. Tonight, your last dinner in Arusha before tomorrow’s flight south to the Spice Island.
Embark on an exhilarating morning flight that transports you from the heart of the savanna to the stunning shores of Zanzibar! In just under an hour, you’ll be embracing the vibrant contrast of Arusha and the breathtaking coastline at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport. The moment you step off the plane, you’re greeted by a symphony of scents: the refreshing salt of the ocean, the enticing aroma of spices, the sweet fragrance of frangipani, and the welcoming warmth of the Indian Ocean breeze.
Next, you’re whisked away to your luxurious beach retreat on the island’s northern or northeast coast, get ready for a remarkable transformation that only a Tanzania and Zanzibar safari combination can offer! With the wild beauty of the bush behind you and the tranquil ocean ahead, your adventure is just beginning. Tonight, let the soothing sound of crashing waves and a romantic, candlelit dinner set the perfect backdrop for pure bliss. Dive into this enchanting experience!
Zanzibar is far more than a beach destination; it is a living archive of Indian Ocean history, where Arab traders, Portuguese navigators, and Swahili merchants left their mark in the carved doorways and winding alleys of Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This morning, explore Stone Town with a local guide: the ancient Fort, the Freddie Mercury Museum, the old slave market, and the Palace of Wonders. Afternoons are for the ocean, snorkelling above coral gardens teeming with parrotfish and sea turtles, or simply lying on a beach that looks like it was designed by someone who had never seen anything imperfect.
Your final full day on the island is unscheduled by design. Zanzibar rewards those who slow down, a sunrise dhow cruise along the coast, a spice farm tour through plantations of cloves, vanilla, and cinnamon, a dolphin-watching excursion at Kizimkazi, or nothing more ambitious than a sun lounger and the Indian Ocean at your feet. Your African Trails Expeditions consultant can arrange any activity in advance, or you may simply let the island decide.
This is the natural exhale at the end of a 12-day Tanzania safari journey, a moment to absorb everything you have seen, felt, and experienced before returning home carrying the particular lightness that only Africa leaves behind.
After a leisurely final breakfast overlooking the Indian Ocean, your African Trails Expeditions representative transfers you to Zanzibar’s airport for your onward flight. Departure times permitting, a late checkout can be arranged. What you carry home is not just photographs but a changed perspective. Africa has a way of making the rest of the world feel slightly less loud and slightly less urgent. When that feeling becomes too strong to ignore, you know where to find us.
