Aberdare Country Club
Former colonial homestead on Mweiga Hill: 1,300 acres of private sanctuary at 7,000 feet, with access to Aberdare National Park, Ol Pejeta, and The Ark.
The Aberdare Highlands sit at the northern arc of the Great Rift Valley, where the land rises sharply from the plains into a world of cedar forest, bamboo moorland, and high-altitude grassland draped in morning mist. On the slopes of Mweiga Hill, at roughly 7,000 feet above sea level, a colonial-era homestead called The Steep was built by an English couple who had chosen Kenya as their home. Their children grew up there. After nearly half a century it changed hands, was carefully extended and opened to guests, and became the Aberdare Country Club — today operated by the Marasa Africa group, which also runs The Ark Lodge in the national park above.
The heritage of the place has not been erased by the transition. Monty Brown, in his book Haven Under the Hill, captured it precisely: the property still carries the settled, unhurried quality of a private home where life is lived at its own pace rather than at the tempo of the outside world. Peacocks move across colourful gardens. Warthog families wander the golf course fairways. The surrounding 1,300-acre private sanctuary supports giraffe, zebra, eland, Thompson’s and Grant’s gazelles, impala, waterbuck, and the occasional leopard that moves through quietly and leaves no announcement of its passing.
The accommodation is distributed across 47 rooms and cottages, from Classic Rooms in the main lodge cluster to freestanding Superior and Signature Cottages with private space and highland views. All are built from permanent materials in keeping with the estate’s established character, and none manufactures a grandeur that the property has never claimed. The tone here is comfortable, warm, and grounded in the actual landscape rather than a curated version of it.
As a safari base, Aberdare Country Club’s position is unusually versatile. The national park is accessible from the gate for half-day and full-day game drives. Solio Ranch — Kenya’s most successful rhino conservancy, home to both black and white rhino — is within range. Ol Pejeta Conservancy, the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa, is also reachable. And for guests seeking the full highlands experience, a night at The Ark Lodge in the park above — where floodlit water holes draw elephant, buffalo, and forest animals through the hours of darkness — pairs directly with a Country Club stay as a single coherent itinerary.
Aberdare Country Club sits on Mweiga Hill in Nyeri County, a converted English homestead on a 1,300-acre wildlife sanctuary combining country-inn comfort with safari access to Aberdare National Park, Solio Ranch, and Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

Rooms & Accommodation
The 47 rooms and cottages at Aberdare Country Club divide into two structural categories: rooms in the main lodge building or adjacent permanent structures, and self-contained cottages set within the estate grounds. Classic Rooms form the majority of the inventory — 36 units with highland views, fan cooling, and self-served coffee facilities, configured in combinations of twin and double. The single Signature Room offers air-conditioning alongside the same Kenya Highlands outlook. Among the cottages, the two Superior Cottages and the sole Signature Cottage provide additional space, air-conditioning, and greater privacy from the main lodge; they suit couples and small groups who want separation from the central activity of the club. All accommodation has Wi-Fi throughout, and golf carts transport guests to rooms across the estate.
Signature Room
The single Signature Room is the most refined option in the main lodge, air-conditioned and finished a level above the Classic configuration. All facilities and highland views consistent with the Classic Rooms.
Superior Cottage
Two Superior Cottages offer detached, air-conditioned accommodation within the estate grounds, with Kenya Highlands views, self-served coffee, and the privacy of a standalone unit. A golf-cart ride from all club facilities.
Signature Cottage
The Signature Cottage is the property's most spacious unit, a freestanding air-conditioned cottage with the best views on the estate and the highest finish level. The unit to request for occasions or guests who prefer standalone accommodation.

Dining
The Lord Aberdare Bar anchors the social life of the club — a comfortable room in the main lodge building where guests congregate before dinner and after game drives, and where the day’s sightings are compared over drinks charged directly to the room. The restaurant produces meals across Continental and Kenyan-influenced cuisine with a kitchen that leans into the highland larder: fresh local produce, clean flavours, and the kind of cooking that sustains an active outdoor itinerary without overcomplicating it.
Bush culinary experiences take the meal out into the sanctuary — a champagne breakfast served in the open grounds as the morning game moves around the club, and sundowner sessions at the top of Kamatongu Hill as the Aberdare mountains catch the last light. These are not novelty extras but genuine expressions of the property’s setting: the landscape earns them without any staging required.

Best Time to Visit
The Aberdare Highlands are accessible and rewarding throughout the year, with the highland climate — cool, misty, and clean at altitude — remaining broadly consistent across the calendar. The dry seasons (January to February and June to October) bring the clearest conditions for game drives, the most reliable game viewing in the Aberdare National Park Salient, and the best photography light on the highland landscape. Solio Ranch and Ol Pejeta are both most comfortable to visit in the dry months when the roads are firm and the vegetation lower.
The long rains (March to May) bring the highland landscape to its most lush and intensely green state — the estate gardens fill out, the acacia and cedar canopy drips with moisture, and the moorlands above take on a quality that justifies the wet-season visit on its own terms. Game viewing continues year-round; the wildlife in the private sanctuary does not migrate. Birdwatching, which is exceptional at this altitude with over 290 species recorded on the property, reaches its peak during the green season when migratory species are present.
For guests combining the Aberdares with a Mount Kenya ascent or a Laikipia plains circuit, the dry seasons offer the most coherent conditions across all three destinations.
