Soroi Mara Bush Camp

The Olare Orok River is one of the Maasai Mara’s seasonal tributaries — a winding, tree-lined waterway whose riverine forest creates a distinct habitat within the reserve’s more open grassland, drawing hippos to its pools, leopards to its overhanging fig trees, and elephants to its banks at dusk. In the dry season its channels slow to quiet pools; in the rains it runs with purpose. Soroi Mara Bush Camp occupies a forested bend on the Olare Orok, completely immersed in the tree canopy with natural grass fences providing additional privacy between tents. The camp’s 12 tents — 10 luxury units and 2 family tents — are raised on wooden stilts and positioned so that every verandah faces the river and the hippo pods that inhabit it year-round. The effect of being in this camp is of being inside the forest rather than adjacent to it: the canvas walls, the wooden platform underfoot, the river sounds below, and the movement of the Mara’s wildlife through the surrounding bush create an immersion that larger, more infrastructure-heavy camps in more open positions cannot replicate.

The camp holds a Gold Eco-Rating from Ecotourism Kenya — one of only 39 properties in the country to hold this designation — and has eliminated single-use plastics across all areas of operation. Tents are furnished with handmade furniture, parquet floors, private bathrooms with hot and cold shower and flush toilet, and private verandahs with river views. The main mess tent opens to outdoor dining under the river trees when weather allows, with star-lit evenings and the sounds of the bush replacing the need for entertainment.
