The Olare Orok River is one of the Maasai Mara’s seasonal tributaries — a winding, tree-lined waterway whose riverine forest creates a distinct habitat within the reserve’s more open grassland, drawing hippos to its pools, leopards to its overhanging fig trees, and elephants to its banks at dusk. In the dry season its channels slow to quiet pools; in the rains it runs with purpose. Throughout the year it is one of the reserve’s most productive wildlife corridors, and the camps that occupy its banks — spaced discreetly through the forest so as to minimise their mutual visibility — are among the Mara’s most sought-after addresses.

Soroi Mara Bush Camp occupies a forested bend on the Olare Orok, completely immersed in the tree canopy with natural grass fences providing additional privacy between tents. The camp’s 12 tents — 10 luxury units and 2 family tents — are raised on wooden stilts and positioned so that every verandah faces the river and the hippo pods that inhabit it year-round. The effect of being in this camp is of being inside the forest rather than adjacent to it: the canvas walls, the wooden platform underfoot, the river sounds below, and the movement of the Mara’s wildlife through the surrounding bush create an immersion that larger, more infrastructure-heavy camps in more open positions cannot replicate.

The camp holds a Gold Eco-Rating from Ecotourism Kenya — one of only 39 properties in the country to hold this designation — and has eliminated single-use plastics across all areas of operation. Tents are furnished with handmade furniture, parquet floors, private bathrooms with hot and cold shower and flush toilet, and private verandahs with river views. The main mess tent opens to outdoor dining under the river trees when weather allows, with star-lit evenings and the sounds of the bush replacing the need for entertainment.

The photographer’s lounge is the camp’s most specific amenity — dedicated working tables with fixed charging points for equipment, a projector and screen for workshops and image review, and a Nikon-partnered photo studio. It is a practical commitment to a guest demographic that the Mara’s wildlife density and the Olare Orok’s dramatic light conditions attract in large numbers, and it has established the camp’s reputation as one of the Mara’s preferred bases for serious wildlife photography.

The camp’s location places it 8 minutes from Ol Kiombo Airstrip — one of the reserve’s main entry points served by daily scheduled flights from Nairobi — and 20 minutes from one of the Mara River’s principal wildebeest crossing points during the Great Migration. The combination of easy air access, prime predator territory on the doorstep, and the Great Migration within short driving distance has made Soroi Mara Bush Camp one of the Soroi Collection’s most consistently high-demand properties across the full year.

Soroi Mara Bush Camp is a Gold Eco Rated Maasai Mara boutique camp with 12 river facing tents raised on stilts. It features a photography studio, massages, a craft shop, and immersive wildlife viewing.

Dining

Dining at Soroi Mara Bush Camp follows the rhythm of the bush rather than a fixed restaurant schedule. The main mess tent serves as the indoor dining space for all weather conditions; when the sky is clear — which in the Maasai Mara is most evenings — meals are served outdoors under the shade of the river trees, with the Olare Orok below and the Mara’s canopy of stars overhead. The combination of al-fresco dining, natural lighting, and the sounds of the bush at dusk makes the camp’s evenings one of the most frequently cited highlights in guest reviews.

Full board covers breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily, plus coffee, tea, and filtered water throughout. Breakfast is timed for the morning drive departure and return; lunch is served on return from the morning game; dinner is the evening’s main event. The kitchen incorporates local African flavours alongside international options, with menus that change daily and respond to fresh produce availability. All beverages beyond coffee, tea, and water are at additional cost. Dietary requirements — vegetarian, vegan, halal, gluten-free — are accommodated with advance notice. In-room massage is available on request, bookable through the camp

Best Time to Visit

The Maasai Mara National Reserve is productive year-round, and Soroi Mara Bush Camp’s position in prime lion and leopard territory on the Olare Orok River ensures consistent wildlife activity in every month. The Soroi Collection recommends a minimum of two to three nights to experience the full range of what the reserve and the camp offer.

The Great Migration window of July to October is the peak season and the period for which the camp’s proximity to the Mara River crossing points is most directly relevant. The wildebeest and zebra move into the Mara ecosystem from late June, and the crossing-point encounters that define the migration experience are within 20 minutes of the camp. Demand for this window is high and advance booking of six months or more is advisable for August and September in particular.

The dry season months of January, February, June, and November offer excellent game-viewing in shorter grass with better visibility, strong photographic light, and more competitive rates than the migration peak. The resident predator population in the Olare Orok area is consistently active in these months, and the absence of the migration’s crowds makes for more intimate, vehicle-light game-viewing in the reserve’s prime corridors.

The long rains of April and May bring lush, green scenery, dramatically light and dramatic skies, and the camp’s lowest visitor numbers. The roads within the reserve can become challenging after heavy rainfall, but the wildlife does not leave the ecosystem and the game-viewing in the Olare Orok area remains rewarding for guests who approach it with patience. Low-season rates apply throughout this period and the camp is at its most private and tranquil. The short rains of November are typically brief afternoon showers that rarely disrupt morning or afternoon game drives.
