Ol Donyo Lodge
Nine-suite Relais & Châteaux lodge on the Chyulu Hills, with plunge pools, star beds, horseback safaris on a 275,000-acre Maasai ranch, and Kilimanjaro views.
Ernest Hemingway called them the Green Hills of Africa. The Chyulu Hills rise from the semi-arid plains between Amboseli and Tsavo West in a geological anomaly — young volcanic hills draped in indigenous cloud forest, rising sharply from a landscape that reads as arid until the hills themselves appear on the horizon, dense and improbably green. The lava fields at their base are among the youngest in the world, surfaced in the ancient black rock that Kilimanjaro expelled over centuries and that now forms the substructure of the Mbirikani Group Ranch — 275,000 acres of private Maasai land that supports one of East Africa’s last functioning wildlife corridors between Amboseli and Tsavo. It is in this landscape, among the big tusker elephant bulls and the recovering lion populations and the fringe-eared oryx that few safari itineraries reach, that Ol Donyo Lodge sits.
The lodge was originally established in 1987 by Richard Bonham, a bush pilot and conservationist who understood the Chyulu Hills ecosystem from the air long before he built in it. The subsequent partnership with Dereck and Beverly Joubert — National Geographic filmmakers and the architects of the Big Cats Initiative — transformed Ol Donyo into a conservation flagship, rebuilding predator populations that had collapsed under human-wildlife conflict and placing the lodge at the centre of a community partnership whose structure has become a model for Maasai conservancy management across Kenya. Today the lodge is operated by Great Plains Conservation and holds Relais & Châteaux status — one of only three properties in Kenya to do so.
The nine suites are individually designed and built from the landscape’s own materials: lava rock, cut and laid to create walls that read as continuations of the terrain rather than impositions on it. Each suite has a private plunge pool positioned to face the open plains and Kilimanjaro, whose summit — 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa — is visible on clear days above the southern horizon. Every rooftop carries a star bed: a proper sleeping configuration under the African sky, positioned above the suite with bedding and a safety enclosure, used by guests who want the experience of a night outdoors without leaving the comfort of the lodge’s hospitality. The waterhole in front of the main lodge area draws a constant and unregimented procession of wildlife — elephant, giraffe, lion, buffalo — viewable from both an elevated open-air hide and a sunken indoor hide equipped with a coffee machine and refrigerator, where guests can spend hours at ground level with the animals without vehicle or glass between them.
The activity range at Ol Donyo is the widest in the Great Plains portfolio and among the widest of any lodge in Kenya. Horse riding through wildlife country on the open ranch, mountain biking across the lava plains, guided night drives, extensive bush walks, a Bell 505 helicopter for scenic flights over the Chyulu Hills and Kilimanjaro, and a bloodhound anti-poaching unit whose handlers will demonstrate tracking techniques for interested guests — the programme is designed for guests who want engagement rather than observation, and for stays of three nights or more that allow the full range to unfold

Rooms & Accommodation
Ol Donyo Lodge’s nine suites are individually designed and constructed from local lava rock, arranged across the hillside to face the waterhole, the open plains, and Kilimanjaro beyond. Three configurations are available: Pool Suites, Deluxe Pool Suites, and the two-bedroom Sambu Suite. All nine share the lodge’s core suite features — private plunge pool, rooftop star bed, deep stone soaking tub, indoor and outdoor shower, covered and open verandahs, yoga mat and fitness equipment, high-quality binoculars, and a professional camera body and lens kit provided for use during the stay. Solar and generator power run 24 hours; Wi-Fi is available throughout; in-room massage can be arranged. The lodge accommodates a maximum of 16 guests, and the small scale ensures the level of personal service that Relais & Châteaux membership requires. Children aged five and above are welcome; children under five are not accommodated.
Pool Suite
Three Pool Suites built into lava rock hillside, each facing the waterhole and plains toward Kilimanjaro. Dining
Dining at Ol Donyo Lodge holds Relais & Châteaux standards in a setting that is wholly Kenyan. The kitchen works from a farm-to-table philosophy with daily menus built around fresh, seasonal, and locally sourced produce, prepared by an executive chef whose output has to satisfy guests who have eaten in the world’s best restaurants and guests who are simply hungry from a full day on horseback — a range the kitchen handles with confidence.
Meals move between the open-air dining area overlooking the waterhole, private verandah dinners served to individual suites, and the bush itself — breakfast in the field after a morning drive, lantern-lit dinners under the acacias on request. Communal evenings around a shared table are also part of the lodge’s rhythm, with the small maximum of 16 guests creating a dynamic where table conversation among strangers reliably becomes the evening’s entertainment. The main lounge has a grand stone fireplace, a small library, and an open bar; the wine list is extensive. The fully inclusive rate covers all meals, beverages including premium spirits and champagne, and the star bed experience. Private verandah dining and bush dinner setups can be arranged for any meal.

Best Time to Visit
Ol Donyo Lodge is open throughout the year, and the Chyulu Hills ecosystem’s wildlife is resident and accessible in every month. The character of a stay changes with the seasons, and the choice of timing has practical implications for specific activities.
The dry seasons — January to mid-June and mid-October to mid-December — bring clear skies, low humidity, and the short grass conditions that maximise visibility for game drives and horse riding. Kilimanjaro is most consistently visible in the early dry-season mornings before convective cloud builds over the summit. The waterhole in front of the lodge is at its most active in the dry months, when surface water on the ranch becomes scarce and wildlife concentrates around permanent sources. These are also the months of the most competitive low and shoulder rates, with the January to June window offering some of the best value in the Ol Donyo calendar.
The high season of mid-June to mid-October aligns the Chyulu Hills with the greater Kenya safari peak — the period when the Great Migration is active in the Maasai Mara and when travellers combining Ol Donyo with a Mara stay can visit both ecosystems in their peak season. The rates reflect this demand, but the experience at Ol Donyo is unaffected by the broader tourism surge — the 275,000-acre private concession maintains its exclusivity regardless of what is happening in the national parks nearby.
The long rains of March to May transform the Chyulu Hills landscape into the vivid green that justified Hemingway’s title — the cloud forest thickens, the plains flower, and the light acquires the dramatic quality that produces exceptional photography. Horse riding in long green grass, with the hills wrapped in mist above and Kilimanjaro briefly visible between cloud breaks, is a specific Ol Donyo experience available only in this window. Game drives require more patience when grass is high, but the resident predator population remains active.
