Serena Beach Resort & Spa
164-room five-star Swahili village resort on Shanzu Beach, with Indian Ocean frontage and the Kenya coast's most complete dining and activity programme.
Shanzu Beach occupies a quiet stretch of the Mombasa north coast, north of the city’s main hotel corridor and far enough from Bamburi’s busier activity to have retained the character of a genuinely unhurried coastal destination. The beach here is what drew Serena Hotels to the site: a continuous band of white coral sand, backed by coconut palms and casuarina, facing a turquoise Indian Ocean whose reef system runs parallel to the shore and whose tidal calendar sets the rhythm of life at the water’s edge. The resort was built on 23 acres of this frontage, and the design decision taken at the outset — to replicate the physical language of a 13th-century Swahili village rather than erect a conventional hotel block — has defined the Serena Beach experience ever since.
The result is a resort that does not read as a resort from the outside. Traditional Swahili village architecture screens the frontage from the road in the manner of the coastal towns it references: winding interior lanes, whitewashed single-storey buildings, carved Zanzibar doors, coral stone pillars, fretwork screens, gleaming arches, and the stone-carved niches that are the signature detail of Lamu and the old island settlements of the Kenya coast. Inside each building, the rooms continue this language — Maasai-inspired hand-painted wall frescos, Lamu-styled four-poster beds, brightly coloured coastal cotton soft furnishings — while delivering the full inventory of five-star comforts: air conditioning, flat-screen satellite television, minibar, private balcony or terrace, and en-suite bathroom.
The 23-acre grounds accommodate the resort’s full range of facilities without pressure: a free-form swimming pool with swim-up bar and a second adults’ pool; the Jahazi Grill seafood restaurant built to resemble a traditional dhow; a main buffet restaurant; the Maisha Spa & Health Club; tennis, padel, volleyball, and archery; watersports from the beach including snorkelling, diving, windsurfing, catamaran sailing, stand-up paddleboarding, and kayaking. Children are well served — a dedicated children’s programme, a pizza parlour, an ice cream shop, a life-size chess set made from recycled flip-flops, and a turtle conservation programme that involves guests directly in one of the coast’s most meaningful wildlife experiences. The resort’s on-site butterfly park and the turtle hatchery together form an environmental programme that has given Serena Beach a Gold Eco-Certification from Ecotourism Kenya — rare for a 164-room resort at this scale.
The north coast location makes Serena Beach the natural coastal extension for safaris that have moved through Tsavo, Amboseli, or the Maasai Mara — Moi International Airport is 30 minutes away, and the flights from Wilson Airport in Nairobi take just over an hour. The resort also functions as a self-contained destination: its activity programme, its dining range, and its beach are consistently sufficient for guests who never leave the grounds.

Dining
Serena Beach Resort & Spa operates three principal dining venues and a bar programme that runs from the beach to the pool to the terrace, covering the full day from dawn to midnight.
The Jahazi Grill is the resort’s signature restaurant — positioned at the ocean’s edge and designed to resemble a traditional Swahili dhow, its deck extending over the beach with uninterrupted Indian Ocean views. The kitchen specialises in fresh-caught seafood and coastal Swahili cuisine: grilled fish, lobster, crab, and the ingredients that define the Kenya coast’s culinary tradition. The Jahazi is consistently the most praised dining experience at the property and is bookable for private beach dinners.
The Fountain Restaurant is the main buffet venue — a large, open dining space serving Continental and full breakfast each morning, and an extensive buffet through lunch and dinner with fresh salads, grilled dishes, and daily-changing menus that incorporate both international cuisines and Kenyan coastal flavours. The restaurant’s terrace enables al fresco dining overlooking the gardens.
The Nyota Terrace serves evening cocktails and light bites in a relaxed, open-air setting with live Kenyan music and entertainment. The swim-up bar at the free-form pool handles daytime refreshments, and a poolside bar serves snacks and drinks throughout the day. Room service operates 24 hours. Dietary requirements — vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, halal, children’s menus — are accommodated with advance notice.

Best Time to Visit
The Mombasa north coast is accessible and enjoyable throughout the year, but the coastal seasons shape the experience in practical ways.
The dry seasons — January to March and June to October — bring clear skies, low humidity, and the most consistently calm sea conditions. The southeast monsoon (kusi) between June and September produces reliable winds for windsurfing and kitesurfing while keeping the air cool; the Indian Ocean remains warm for swimming and snorkelling throughout. These months see the highest visitor numbers and the most competitive atmosphere at the resort’s facilities, particularly during the school holiday windows of July and August.
October to March is turtle nesting season on Shanzu Beach — the period when the resort’s conservation programme is most active and when guests have the opportunity to witness or participate in hatchling releases. The short rains of October and November are generally brief afternoon showers that do not interrupt beach or pool time significantly; the water is warm and the resort is less crowded than in the peak dry months. Low-season rates apply in April and May during the long rains, when sustained afternoon rainfall is more likely, the sea can become rougher, and some watersports are limited — but the resort’s indoor facilities, spa, and dining programme remain fully operational and rates are at their most competitive.
For guests combining Mombasa with a safari — the natural Kenya itinerary — the July to October window aligns peak safari season (Great Migration in the Mara, dry-season game viewing throughout Kenya) with the best beach conditions at Shanzu. The flight from Wilson Airport to Moi International takes just over an hour.
